Comics I am currently following

“Batman: Rebirth” by Tom King
Batman has been and always will be my favorite superhero and Tom King and company are certainly doing the caped crusader justice. This run of Batman had a decent start but has since elevated to the most engaging story out of all the runs I’m reading. Tom King is showing a unique side of Batman; we’re seeing a character who is devoted to crime fighting beginning to find an alternative to his life, a happier life that doesn’t consist of Jokes and Riddles. If I had to recommend one DC: Rebirth line to pick up, then this is it.

“Superman: Rebirth” by Patrick J. Tomasi and Patrick Gleason
I’ve written a separate blog post all about this run (which you should check out) but I’m gonna reiterate its greatness anyway. Tomasi and Gleason have put together one of the best Superman comic lines in years thanks to a unique approach to the man of steel with the inclusion of a strong family aspect. Clark’s wife and son add a new layer to his character as well as standing on their own. Jon Kent has become one of my favorite new characters in DC: Rebirth; he’s just a kid with everyday problems a kid would have, he just happens to have godlike powers to boot which makes for an awesome story-line and I can’t wait to see where it goes!

“Detective Comics” by James Tynion IV
Detective Comics is where Batman made his first appearance way back in 1939 and the incredible stories are staying strong with this addition to the DC: Rebirth universe from James Tynion IV. I’m currently playing catch up with this run and am enjoying every page. Batman isn’t the only caped crusader here as he’s enlisted the help of his cousin, Batwoman, to assemble a team of defenders for Gotham City consisting of memorable heroes and even a former super-villain. If you call yourself a Batman fan that this is a must-read!

“Action Comics” by Dan Jurgens
Another DC: Rebirth series; this run of the decades old “Action Comics” has consisted of multiple exciting events in the Rebirth story-line which is the sole reason I’ve been reading part of Jurgens’ run. I have not read every issue of this run since it began as I’ve only read the major events that have occurred in “Action Comics” such as Superman Reborn and The Oz Effect. While I have not read the majority of Jurgens’ work I can attest to his magnificent work in the aforementioned events. Superman Reborn was a 4-issue crossover with over with “Superman: Rebirth” and was not only a near perfect Superman story but an amazing insight to creation of the DC: Rebirth universe. The Oz Effect is a 5-part event and is nearly at an end with part 5 releasing in a couple of weeks. This may be my favorite event I’ve read yet in DC: Rebirth as Jurgens is orchestrating a great conflict within the character of Superman as the identity of the looming Mr. Oz finally revealed and I can’t wait to see how it ends!

“Dark Nights: Metal” by Scott Snyder
This DC Universe event has been planned by the great Scott Snyder for years and the first three issues along with a brilliant prelude have created a tantalizing mystery in “Dark Nights: Metal”. Centered around Batman, this series delves into a dark region of the multiverse filled with terrifying new foes that only the Justice League can stop before their world is engulfed in an eternal dark night. Scott Snyder is one of the best Batman writers in recent memory and I can’t wait to see where he takes my favorite superhero next.

 “X-Men: Gold” by Marc Guggenheim
The X-Men are my favorite superhero team in all of comics. I’ve always loved the mature themes and relatable characters in X-Men and both are brought to fruition in this new gold-standard for X-men comics from Marc Guggenheim. This is an awesome team of X-men led by Kitty Pryde that includes iconic heroes like Storm and Nightcrawler among others in their mission for mutant equality as well as stopping the forces of evil.
“X-Men: Blue” by Cullen Bunn
Like “X-Men: Gold” this run consists of a team of the super-powered mutants but this one’s a bit more old-school as the “X-Men: Blue” team is the original five X-men led by Jean Grey along with Cyclops, Beast, Iceman and Angel. This run revolves more around its characters which works wonderfully as each X-man is as engaging as the last. I love it when I can relate to superheroes and I’ve always found the X-men to be on a realistic level and that doesn’t change here thanks to the efforts of Cullen Bunn and company.

“Daredevil” by Frank Miller
Frank Miller’s legendary run on the man without fear during the 1980’s is one I’ve just recently started reading and Miller’s work has lived up to my expectations and then some. Matt Murdock a.k.a. Daredevil is honestly becoming one of my favorite superheroes thanks to Miller’s spectacular writing that unfolds Daredevil as the tragic and powerful hero he is. Matt Murdock has an internal conflict on whether to kill or not to kill and what the consequences of sparing the lives of criminals may be making him a truly fascinating character. Most of all though, Miller makes Daredevil feel real. This is a real person with serious inner turmoil along with a need to do good which can blur the line between a just superhero and a vengeful vigilante.

“Peter Parker: The Spectacular Spider-Man” by Chip Zdarsky
I have a full review of this amazing series in a separate blog post (which all of you should also check out) over the first three issues and it’s only getting better! Spider-Man has been my favorite Marvel superhero since I was a kid and seeing the web-head being done justice by Chip Zdarsky has been such a blast! This comic is getting everything about the characters right from Spidey to the Human Torch along with a brilliant art style from Adam Kubert. This is my favorite running Marvel series right now and shows no signs of slowing down!
