"Blade Runner: 2049" Film Review

Before I delve into my thoughts on “Blade Runner: 2049” allow me to divulge some valuable information regarding the film. “Blade Runner: 2049” is a sequel to Ridley Scott’s “Bladerunner” which released in 1982 to a mostly negative response. It wasn’t until years later that the film gained a bit of a cult following and eventually became a hailed masterpiece by many. I watched the theatrical cut of “Bladerunner” the night before I saw 2049 and I very much like it. However, there are many cuts of “Bladerunner” and I’ve been told by reliable sources that the final cut released in 2007 is the one to watch but I only had access to the theatrical cut. After viewing 2049 I am very excited to watch the final cut of the original film as well as see 2049 again.
I would recommend seeing the original “Bladerunner” before going to see the sequel as watching the original will mostly help to establish the state of the world of Bladerunner and increase your enjoyment of the sequel.
Now that I’ve gotten that out of the way I ABSOLUTELY LOVED “Blade Runner: 2049” to pieces. I just cannot say that enough, I LOVED this film! From the incredible visual effects to the brilliant ideas presented Denis Villeneuve’s film is true work of art in my book. I will not go into too much depth for why I loved “Blade Runner: 2049” so much because I’d be spoiling the movie in doing so and I encourage everyone reading this to go out and see this beautiful movie for themselves. I promise that the cinematography and visual effects are worth the price of admission alone.
The film stars Ryan Gosling plays Kay, a cop for the LAPD, who uncovers a secret that could “break the world” and must track down Harrison Ford’s character to solve this mystery and that is all I will say about the plot. Gosling gave a mesmerizing lead performance that made me not only more engaged with his character but with the film’s surprising story as well. Harrison Ford might just receive an Oscar nomination for best supporting actor for his role in “Blade Runner: 2049”. Ford was the lead in the original Blade Runner and returns to play the same character, Rick Deckard. Harrison Ford brings a level of emotion to this stunning piece of science fiction that elevates it to an intense drama.

The visual effects are one of the biggest stars of “Blade Runner: 2049” as is the cinematography from the great, Roger Deakins, who is a lock for best cinematography at the Oscars and a golden trophy for visual effects wouldn’t be a bad bet either. Every shot of this movie is gorgeous and adds to the mood of each scene brilliantly. These achievements are due in large part to the director, Denis Villeneuve, of course who made as a good a sequel as one could make to the 1982 classic. If “Blade Runner: 2049” isn’t on your radar for new movies I assure you that this film is one of a kind with its dazzling special effects, brilliant story and engaging characters leading to a true standout in 2017 thus far.
